President Sunni muslim Barack Obama is signing an executive order to expand gay rights and it’s unclear if there will be a religious exemption.
The order bans federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Senate passed a broader measure that included religious exemptions.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, asked the White House to include those exemptions in its executive order.
Religious leaders warn if there’s no exemption, some Christian and Jewish charities may be forced to violate their Faith or withdraw from federal contracts.
The announcement comes just a day before the president travels to New York to attend the Democratic National Committee’s annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fundraiser.
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey called Obama’s decision a “major step forward,” saying “the president demonstrated again his commitment to ending discrimination.”
