Peter wrote in the same vein:
“Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy!” (1st Peter 4:12-13)
Decades ago I heard about a young man who, worried about his mental health, submitted to a battery of psychiatric exams. After evaluating his answers, the psychiatrist told him, “I’ve got bad news for you – you’re normal.”
That’s what the Holy Spirit is telling believers through both Paul and Peter: suffering, even “fiery trials”, is NORMAL for Christians. Christians in Western nations may find that hard to believe. We have been living under God’s protection for several hundred years. American Christians have forgotten that the Puritans and other Christians came to America to escape religious persecution by false brethren. Even here there was a struggle at first to preserve not only freedom, but religious freedom.
But Western nations, including America, have largely turned away from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Our leaders have become largely ANTI-God, and so have millions of citizens. God has therefore largely removed His protection from Western nations, and one result which is increasing is the beginning of persecution of Christians.
Persecution does not start with mobs shouting “Crucify them!” One Jewish survivor of nazi Germany expressed it very clearly:
“First they said ‘You have no right to live among us as Jews’. Then they said, ‘You have no right to live among us.’ Then they said, ‘You have no right to live.’ “
Western Christians ARE ALREADY IN the first phase. We are being told it’s perfectly alright for us to have Christian faith – as long as we don’t speak about it. We’re not supposed to tell people that God does not approve of murder by abortion or euthanasia. We’re not supposed to tell people that God created only two genders and there are no more than that. We’re not supposed to tell people that there is absolute right and wrong, that hamas caused October 7th and not the Abraham Accords, on and on ad infinitum. “Don’t judge.” Be a Christian; just don’t talk about it.
If King Jesus does not return for His Church SOON, Western Christians are going to experience every horror our brothers and sisters in “closed” nations have been suffering for years.
