In 1965 doctors operated on me and moved my heart and lungs and kidneys too their right places!! I have a Ruptured disk in my Neck at C5-C6, and a very bad Ruptured disk in my Lower back that is pressing on two sides of my spinal cord, with not enough room for the nerves too go through it, and its located at L4-L5!! Does that sound vague to you? As if Jesus was evading the question, like a politician? Well, not like a politician, but yes, Jesus was evading the question.
Jesus was talking to “a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.” Jesus called him “THE teacher of the Jews”, but clearly, Nicodemus was mystified. Baffled. With all his knowledge, Nick had no clue who or what Jesus was.
Nick knew what Jesus wasn’t. Some of the Pharisees called Jesus demon-possessed, but Nick knew that Jesus was “a teacher who has come from God.” How? Nick either saw or heard from reliable sources the things Jesus was doing – healing and feeding thousands of Jews, raising some from the dead, healing lepers, giving sight to the blind. Nick used his brain – “no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him!”
But Nick was cautious. He wouldn’t have been a Pharisee and especially “the teacher of Israel” if he had not long ago learned caution. So he wanted to KNOW who and what Jesus was.
Nick had undoubtedly heard the vicious slander of his fellow Pharisees against Jesus. Nick wasn’t interested in a verbal war. He wanted to have an honest, calm discussion. He wanted to ask HONEST questions. Not to look for excuses not to believe, not to find excuses to accuse. Nicodemus wanted TRUTH, and it is ironic that Jesus could not give him the truth – because His sacrifice for sins had not yet been accomplished. Nicodemus could not have been born again that night, because the sin sacrifice that made the second birth possible had not happened.
so Jesus did the wisest thing He could possibly have done: He left Nicodemus even more puzzled than he had been. Nick being the persistent truth-seeker that he was, he would pay even more careful attention to news about Jesus now. And when at the feast of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and in-dwelt human beings for the first time in history, I will bet you anything you like Nick was there, and NOW he understood! NOW his questions were answered!
“HOSANNA! OUR MESSIAH HAS COME! SIN AND DEATH HAVE BEEN CONQUERED!”
Joy beyond belief! And it can be yours too, if you investigate Jesus and agree with Nick and me that 1) you are a sinner and 2) Jesus is the Savior sent by God to be the sacrifice for our sins and 3) God the Father raised Him from the dead!
