Studying John’s Gospel, chapter 17 tonight, I thought about the fact that many of the things Jesus said to His disciples, especially in His last hours on earth, seemed strange and frightening. The disciples were confused. The world was changing before their eyes and they were confused. It hit me that we are in a similar situation. The disciples were warned by Jesus that they were going to be put out of the synagogues, persecuted, even killed. They had been expecting Him to “restore the Kingdom to Israel”. As it turned out, Israel was destroyed as a nation and the persecution of Christians, in latter centuries by the “Christian” churches as well as secular authorities, saw millions of Christians martyred.
We are in a similar situation. We have the promise of the return of King Jesus to remove us from Earth, but we don’t know if even Western-nation Christians are going to be persecuted before that happens.
Daniel chapter 11 is a prophecy of our time or a time very similar: international wars, confusion, fear, betrayal, even among secular governments and people. In verses 33-35, Daniel gives us a preview which even now we can see beginning to unfold, and he gives us instructions for victory:
“With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered. When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere will join them. Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.”
What is coming is frightening and not desirable, but it’s not a surprise to God. The key that Daniel gives us for triumph in Christ is, “… the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.” Know our God. How? By His Word.
Don’t fight the wrong battle, brothers and sisters: “… we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:12-13)
May God give us all strength to be His loyal witnesses to the end. Those who are have an invitation to the most joyful celebration the Universe has ever seen or ever will see: “the wedding feast of the Lamb”! I hope to see you all there.
