Romans 12:3-10 is a description of how we ought to consider each other and ourselves n relation to each other. This is how I read it:
Don’t be arrogant or proud. Our abilities are a gift from God. Our abilities are not a measure of our value as human beings.
Christians are all part of one Body. We are (or should be) dependent on each other to supply all the needs of the Body. This is not welfare. This is recognition of spiritual needs as well as material needs. Sometimes we have to depend on each other for material things too. The hostile beings who have great power in this world can attack us in many ways. When they do, we should help each other stand when we are attacked! Don’t let a brother or sister fall when you can help them! We belong to each other. Our abilities were given us to serve each other, not for our own prestige or enrichment.
Therefore what counts with God is not what abilities we have. It’s whether we use them to serve the Body in humility and with love. Even those among us who are unattractive or unlovable.
4: Verse 10: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor each other.”
Reading and thinking about this caused me to realize a recent failure of mine in dealing with another believer. I reacted with pride and arrogance instead of brotherly love. Had another believer not intervened, I could have caused myself regret and another pain. I know now how to respond to similar situations in the future, if (God, help me!) I can REMEMBER what I’ve learned.
It’s disappointing and embarrassing to realize such things about yourself. But we have to ask and accept forgiveness and go on. We can’t expect ourselves or our brothers and sisters in the faith to be perfect. Love and forgiveness are absolute necessities if we want our faith to be pleasing to God and helpful to the Body of Christ.
That’s part of the reason King Jesus warned the Church in Ephesus in spite of all their excellent overall performance, “Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”
And what Paul wrote, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” (1st Corinthians 13:1-3)
