It’s funny how words affect different people differntly. I actually don’t like the word “glory”. There’s nothing wrong with it, but for some reason I don’t even I have a negative reaction toward it. This bothered me for some time when I read Bible verses about giving God glory. But one day I thought about what the word glory means in that context.
It means to give God the HONOR that is due to Him. When I consider how many reasons there are to honor God, I am overwhelmed with awe and adoration!
He created the entire Universe with His word. Consider the VAST number of objects and living creatures in just our solar systelm. Consider how finely tuned the Universe, or just our solar sustem is such that it sustains life. Not lony does such INFINITELY MASSIVE complexity demand a designer, it is a resounding demonstration of this Scripture verse:
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse”. (Romans 1:20)
Not only do “the things that are made” display God’s UNIMAGINABLY MASSIVE POWER, INTELLIGENCE, and WISDOM, they also tell us about God’s character and personality:
He loves beauty! Think of the vast array of different beautiful flowers, sunrises, butterflies, colorful butterflies!
He is a master genetics engineer! There are undreds of thousands of life-forms from bacteria to blue whales, all (where man hasn’t destroyed part of the web) depending on dozens of other life-forms and all working (where not damaged) in perfect harmony! Even in this sin-damaged world!
GOD IS LOVE! Look how fiercely mother animals defend their young! God built love into the Universe! Lsten to your own heart as you think about your closest family and friends! “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” If you read many accounts of military action, you have no doubt read accounts of soldiers throwing themselves on grenades, protecting their brothers at the cost of their own lives. GOD built that into the human race.
God is THE Master Physicist! We’ve all heard warnings of asteroids coming so close to earth that they endanger all life on earth. But that has not happened in recorded history. The planets go on spinning in their PRECISELY TUNED orbits, at just the right speed, wihtout a hiccup. We know from the Bible that there will be cataclysmic upheaval in the last half of the Great Tribulation, but that is orchestrated by God for His purposes. It is predcited because God has prepared it for the right time in His plan, and nothing can change that. “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:21-22)
There are so many more things for which our Gopd deserves honor! And when I consider even a few of them, I want to SHOUT for joy and amazement!
Read Job 38:4-41 !! There’s not room for it here, but it is God reciting some of His mighty works!
And I am GLAD to honor God in my poor way. If some use the word “glory”, that’s fine with me. But “honor” is the word that resonates in my heart! “Honor God!” YES! AMEN! HALLELUJAH! HOSANNA!
