The Greek word translated “dissimulation” is anupokritos, which means “without hypocrisy”. If I have a problem loving my brother or sister in Christ, I need to examine myself in God’s presence and see if I need to change my attitude. This is such a strong indicator that the Holy Spirit through John wrote, “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.” (1st John 3:14)
There’s both a negative and a poistive command in the rest of the verse:
“Abhor that which is evil”: the Blue Letter Bible makes iot very plain: abhor means “to dislike, abhor, have a horror of” Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance adds “detest utterly”. Brothers and sisters, if evil makes us smile, we have a SERIOUS problem and we need to spend time in serious prayer to God asking Him to show us if we are even born again.
“Cleave to that which is good”: Blue Letter Bible defines “Cleave to” as “to glue together, cement, fasten together”.
Pretty clear: don’t be a hypocrite in your love, detest evil, fasten yourself tightly to what is good. Keeps life simple, doesn’t it? Maybe not easy, but simple.
