Amen, Kristi! Thank you for posting that very important testimony of Jesus about Himself!
With those words King Jesus made a crystal clear claim not only to be “a” god, but to be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Who had led the children of Israel out of Egypt and performed massive miracles on Israel’s behalf such as had never been seen before.
Jesus actually said something very similar twice before in that chapter. If you check the Greek, you discover that in verses 24 and 28, the word “he” is italicized in the Authorized Version, meaning it’s not in the Greek.
John 8:24:
“I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”
John 8:28:
“Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.”
Jesus was saying that He was “I am” even then.
Those two sentences didn’t make sense unless you assumed that Jesus was even then declaring Himself to be “the great I Am”. Give the Pharisees credit: they didn’t jump on those instances. But when Jesus unmistakably decalred Himself to be “I Am” by changing verb tenses, the Pharisees had no choice but to believe Him or kill Him, because blasphemy against God was punishable by death under Moses’ Law.
