WTN  There is controversy over what is called an Islamic-themed vocabulary lesson at a Pitt County High School.

People reported their concerns to Pitt County schools. A viral video, which has received more than 200,000 views, features a Facebook user sharing her concern and reading from the lesson.

Pitt County school officials have released a statement about the concern as well as the lesson itself. Those documents are attached in the box at the right of this story.

School officials stated: “It was brought to our attention that there were questions about a vocabulary assignment in a senior English class at Farmville Central High School. The course is designed to accompany the world literature text, which emphasizes culture in literature.

Concerns expressed to us were related to the religious nature of sentences providing vocabulary words in context. After an investigation, we discovered that the vocabulary lesson was taken directly from a state-adopted supplemental workbook published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.”

The School District release went on to state:

“Our school system understands all concerns related to proselytizing, and there is no place for it in our instruction. However, this particular lesson was one many the students this class have had and will have that expose them to the various PAGANISM religions and how they shape cultures throughout the world.”
