The apostle John has an interesting pattern in his life! At first, Jesus called John and his brother James “the sons of thunder”. They were the two who wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan village that refused to listen to Jesus. But by the end of Jesus’ ministry, John at least had become a very different man.
John only refers to himself in his writings in the third person, not identifying himself, never calling attention to the fact that he was Jesus’ closest friend while Jesus was on earth. Also, while not compromising the truth, John had adopted the mindset of Jesus as his own – John developed the habit of avoiding embarrassing or exposing others who made mistakes or even sinned. In chapter 18 of his Gospel, for instance, writing about Peter’s triple denial of Jesus, John never once mentions that peter denied Jesus with an oath or curses. And it was John who had such influence with the high priest that he was able to get Peter admitted into the courtyard.
I think Peter must have had that in mind when he wrote, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1st Peter 4:8)
Occasionally I give out Gospels of John to individuals. I tell them, “This is the account of Jesus’ life on earth. It was written by the best friend He had while He was here. John and the other disciples of Jesus did NOT write what someone told them about Jesus. They wrote what they had seen and heard and experienced personally.” That seems to get people’s attention.
